Services Offered

Personal Mental Health Counseling

UNO Counseling Services offers personal counseling to all currently enrolled UNO students. Counseling is available to individuals, couples, and families as long as one partner/family member is a UNO student.

Counseling Services utilizes a variety of assessments and interventions for diagnosis and to determine the best possible course of treatment for common mental health issues. Counseling Services is committed to a time-limited model of service delivery. Sessions are usually scheduled on a weekly basis and last approximately fifty minutes. The length of treatment varies depending on the nature of the problem. It will typically last from 1 to 10 sessions, but the actual length of treatment will be determined by you and your counselor. Short-term or brief intervention is the primary focus of the services offered. When longer term or specialized counseling is needed, a referral to appropriate community resources is made.

Please Note: UNOCS does not provide counseling services for UNO faculty and staff. If you are a member of UNO faculty or staff, please contact UNO Human Resources Management for information about employee assistance programs and related benefits.

Career Counseling

Individual career counseling is available for students seeking assistance in exploring career options. The goal of career counseling is to help the student make decisions about career directions. Counseling Services will not choose careers for students, suggest majors and/or what courses to take, or provide academic advising.

Instead, assistance in examining career options in light of an individual's values, skills, and interests is provided, as well as assistance in gathering information and researching relevant occupational areas. In addition to individual testing, workshops are offered to specific student groups whenever needed and to the general student population on a rotating schedule throughout the year.

Career Assessments Used at UNOCS:

Campbell Interest and Skill Survey

The CISS instrument is used by counselors, psychologists, and human resource professionals in mental health, business, and educational settings. It can be useful in:

  • Exploring new avenues in career development. With the CISS instrument, students and adults learn how their likes, dislikes, and self-reported skills compare to those of individuals who are happily and successfully employed in a variety of occupations.

  • Pinpointing areas of academic study that can build skills and, as a result, increase career options.

  • Helping individuals seeking personal counseling to find occupations or vocations that help meet their psychological needs.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

The most widely used personality inventory in the world, the MBTI instrument provides an accurate picture of a person’s personality type. It determines preferences on four dichotomies:

  • Extraversion–Introversion

  • Sensing–Intuition

  • Thinking–Feeling

  • Judging–Perceiving

Combinations of these preferences result in 16 distinct personality types. Understanding characteristics unique to each personality type, provides insight on how they influence an individual’s way of communicating and interacting with others.

Online Career Resources:

U.S. Department of Labor site includes much of the information found in its flagship publication, The Occupational Outlook Handbook.

American's Career InfoNet, maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, includes information on more than 460 occupations. Besides salary data, the site includes links to market outlook and job listings by state and profession.

Salary.com has 1,100 titles in its database. It includes information on base pay, salary ranges, and total compensation packages.

The UNO Office of Career Development also has a site with important announcements about local job fairs, professional discussions, and other seminars. The site also features links to other websites and downloadable assessments to assist with career decisions.

The Career Key provides an assessment of your interests, skills, values, and personality, and then suggests potential career fields based on your results.

Type Focus offers a free, shortened version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The full version of this assessment is available at UNO Counseling Services and is used in conjuction with other assessments to assist clients in their career choices.
